Water Quality

You may have received a Consumer Confidence Report for Carmichael Water District (CWD). The Consumer Confidence report is a requirement from the California Department of Health Services Office of Drinking Water. This report is required to use mandatory language and terminology that many of our customers may not be familiar with or understand.

Many customers have asked, "I just want to know if my water is safe to drink?"

The answer is yes. The drinking water supplied to the customers of CWD meets and in most cases exceeds the State and Federal Drinking Water Standards.

Response to EWG Tap Water Database

CWD is aware of the alarmist report released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) alleging that there are contaminants in CWD’s drinking water and the water does not meet the latest health guidelines.

CWD is concerned that a private organization released a compilation of data from the federal, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Enforcement and Compliance History database (ECHO) without further review and evaluation. CWD’s drinking water is safe, of the highest quality from the American River, and surpasses all state and federal drinking water standards.

Drinking water standards are set by the EPA with a systematic approach to determine which substances are regulated for the health of all Americans. Those regulations take into account occurrence data and health effects research and should reflect the best available science. Carmichael Water District supports robust regulations that protect public health and proactive research that identifies and examines new substances found in source waters.

CWD strongly believes that the safety of our source water is extremely important. The better protection of our source water the less difficult and costly is to treat the water to achieve the high level of water quality our rate payers expect from the tap.

CWD is the premier water supplier in Carmichael serving a population of 42,000 people.
