The Carmichael Water District is thrilled to announce that the Garfield Avenue Transmission Pipeline Replacement project was awarded $959,752 in the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Interior and Environment Appropriations bill. Representative Ami Bera (Calif. – 6) and Senator Alex Padilla selected this project for Congressionally Directed Spending and their support for this project made this funding possible.

The Garfield Avenue Transmission Pipeline is a key pipeline in our district,” said Paul Selsky, President of the Board of Directors. “ This funding will support our efforts to improve connectivity with groundwater suppliers, enhance water transfer capabilities, and ensure resilient and efficient management of water resources as climate change threatens residents’ water access. We sincerely appreciate Representative Bera and Senator Padilla’s support that has been essential to meet the needs of the communities we serve.”

The Garfield Avenue transmission pipeline is a 14-inch backbone pipeline that connects three wells, a 3-million gallon tank, and numerous 8-inch steel pipelines. This project will replace 9,600 feet of 14-inch steel pipeline with 12-inch ductile iron pipes and 3,500 feet of 8-inch auxiliary connected pipelines to secure water transportation from the La Sierra Aquifer Storage and Recovery well, ensure connectivity with the Sacramento Suburban Water District, and enhance water transfer capabilities between neighboring agencies.

Established in 1916, the Carmichael Water District serves approximately 44,000 customers. In the last decade, climate change induced drought conditions and State Water Resources Control Board curtailment orders resulted in a 100% reduction in surface water supply for the district. The district is constructing two groundwater wells to secure residents’ water supply.
